Re: recording mediums

Back to the original posting, I recently got a Tascam 112MKII rack mount cassette deck. Sounds amazing. My plan for this is to have the tape on recording the master bus at all times as I play around. This way the computer never comes on and distracts. I can pull loops from that or get ideas for futu...

Re: Vintage Drum Machines

Agreed - 606s are still cheap! At least relative to the 808s and 909s. My latest drum machine purchase is a Korg KR-55B. Stoked to play with it!

Re: Software types & tutorials for newbies?

Or... go the hardware route, and not have to worry about learning software. Get a cheap/used synth and drum machine, and just start playing.

Re: recording mediums

Semantics aside, what I always avoid is setting all instruments at the same level. For me, that creates a very flat mix. And I don't think many on here can afford an outside "masterer". Software such as Ozone 5 do a great job in mastering, as well as helping with the mix; at least for thos...

Re: recording mediums

My opinion is that mastering is an integral part of the production process. By choosing which instrument/track goes at which level is tied into the very existence of the instrument/track itself. Unless you seek to create a flat song of equal levels on each instrument/track, then by nature you are pu...

Re: recording mediums

My ideal would be removing the computer from the equation. Not sure how viable this is though. Tossing around the idea of getting a multi-track recorder for the various elements (synths, drum machine, etc.) then just using a DAW for mastering. To my knowledge, there's no software currently available...

Re: MIDI keyboard for $ 200 - what?

I wish more VST manufacturers would also release MIDI equipment such as this (referring to the MS-20 device): http://www.vintagesynth.com/korg/legacy.php - but not in miniature version.

Juno 60s do seem tasty, however not sure I would like the sliders (compared to rotary knobs)...

Re: MIDI keyboard for $ 200 - what?

P.S. I just had my Pro One repaired - just short of $400 (to replace bushings and clean guts). So the hardware (especially vintage) game is definitely not for the weary! But believe me when I say, a perfectly functioning Pro One is worth its weight in gold! P.P.S. If anyone reading has interest in v...

Re: MIDI keyboard for $ 200 - what?

Personally I hate the idea of "mapping". I want to make music, not program a device. This is why I like hardware synths (virtual or analog). Turn it on and play. I look at a knob, it tells me what it does, and it does it (as long as it's working obviously). It's the difference between &quo...

Re: Vintage Drum Machines

Just to chime in here (again). You can find Drumtraks pretty cheap - as in a few hundred $. They have MIDI, sound amazingly retro. Hard to beat in my opinion. Can't see how an 808 would be worth thousands more. The 707 though I think is still a good value and not too expensive.
