I'm a total newbie interested in learning how to make witchhouse music. Would really appreciate your thoughts on:

1) What are the basic software types most commonly used?
2) Where to get them?
3) How to learn?

There's a beginning to everything :) Thanks!

there are lots of tutorials for various software on youtube, for example I taught myself ableton purely from those.
Best of luck :)

Ableton is great, logic as well. I started out on Reason which I'd also recommend, as you get a good grasp on routings and the synths are awesome. But yeah, youtube is probably the way to go (boyinaband is nice for Reason users), and find someone IRL to talk to about this stuff. Feedback is absolutely crucial.

Finally, the thing for me to learn wasn't really as much the music as it was the work flow. Work _every_ day, even when you don't feel like it. I hated it at first, because everything sounded like shit (some of it stil does :p). As someone said in the other thread, this really is a marathon, not a sprint. You never stop learning.

Or... go the hardware route, and not have to worry about learning software. Get a cheap/used synth and drum machine, and just start playing.
