Getting drums to come through the track.. if you want

Post Posted

so i understand some people might not necessarily care whether the drums are loud enough on their tracks, but if you want, a neat trick i do is to resample the whole song without the drums.
once that's done mute the other instruments and what not so you only have the resample, and the drums playing.
It's pretty simple after this, cuz you can either just adjust the levels, or sidechain the resample to the drum, so it ducks ever so (or a lot).

https://soundcloud.com/sirens-and-satyrs/creatures is an example

https://soundcloud.com/sirens-and-satyrs/qcmewipq73sd and an even better example

this is just one way of doing it, share some other ways if you got em!

*pm if you got any questions im happy to help!

Nice tip! I usually don't want all drums too loud and I process each one individually. Then I aply a compressor on the kicks so it gets a litle deatached when pumps, sometimes I just screw up this step and end up getting the oposite effect, but most of times it works fine. Sounds like this song, or this one.

Sidechain compression is delicious! :)

1. put limiter on master channel

2. use exciter on drums

I have had a lot of luck by using bus compression as a send effect. I add it to the tracks that I want to stand out such as the drums and the bass. As a send effect it is helpful because you can control the level of the effect in each channel separately.
