Mainly a drum and bass (though i suppose dubstep is there as well) forum, it can be a great resource for producers of any types of music. Lots of stuff on compression, synths, etc...

http://www.rhythm-lab.com/breakbeats-1_1 Really good quality collection of classic breaks. He also does some pretty funky home-made sample packs.

Now we're cookin'!

This guy has a bunch of freeware VST's that are decent - particularly of interest are his 606 and 808 emulators (Tromine GT and Tromine Z, respectively.)

Well, the only DAW ive used so far that doesn't totally perplex me is FL Studio. It came with a few VSTs, but none of them have that screw vibe i'm looking for. I also don't know anything about mixing or manipulation. Tips?

Sounds like ya might have interface-phobia! But don't worry: just remember that even though the cockpit of a 747 has all of those dials & buttons, 90% of them are redundant duplicates - the same is true of most DAWs (although ProTools feels more involved - and life-threatening - than flying a 747, at least to me.)

Tips?

JUST DO IT. And keep doing it as much and often as you can. Like any other instrument, the guy who plays guitar for 8 hours a day 2 years in a row will likely be better than the guy who plays 2 hours a day for 8 years in a row. Immerse yourself. Familiarize yourself with all of the core ideas of audio that began before computers (stuff like Tape Op magazine and the "Behind The Glass" books, as well as the production-nerd forums at places like gearslutz.com and kvraudio.com.)

OK, I begrudgingly offer this even though it's one of my all time favorite freeware plugs and I'd hate to see it abused... ;)

AMBIENCE reverb.

This guy makes some good plugs - I love the Nyquist EQ too - but Ambience is hands-down some serious wonderfulness. It's available as both VST and AU.

Just very belatedly saw that shout out to 'Tape Op' magazine ܍DCΞL܍. Good taste!
