WH/Dark Dance Scene Is Exploding In LA & Elsewhere

Apparently Skrillex/Sonny himself was at Gatekeeper/White Car show in LA the other night. Already so many dark indie(trust/grimes/etc), witch house, and related shows continually sell out within days. There's now several witch house clubs in LA and across the US. Tons of buzz for the Light Asylum/Tearist/Chelsea Wolfe show in a couple weeks there.
And witchhouse/dark indie/dark electronic pop bands completely took over SXSW it seemed like, with multiple showcase nights(I think it was 3 or 4?)

If Brooklyn was getting all witchy last year(sadly havent heard about too many related events this year so far in NY),
then LA seems to be the epicenter right now(with San Francisco as a close second...home to oOoOO, Tundra Dubs label, and a continuous stream of many of the well known bands coming through)
Heck I think even Portland and Seattle are starting to have related shows and events/clubs.

It's as if...all the older industrial/goth fans tired of the cyber00ntz, all the indie kids tired of the clap-your-hands jangly alt rock, and all the general freaks/outcasts/artists/creative types have been converging around all this stuff. I generally post on my blogs and facebook a daily shotgun blast of new indie releases across genres, but its been posting about the new oOoOO, Purity Ring, Light Asylum, AIMON, etc that has gotten the most comments and likes by all sorts of people.

I know many people, myself included, began to write off this smart phone/meme/app/hashtag sterile blah snapshot of time we're living in...but there seems to also be a strong parallel uprising and potential for really creative scenes and sounds. Pretty much, I havent seen people this inspired with music and geeking out about new band discoveries in ages.
So the world can have their Bon Iver, Beirut, Black Keys and Iron and Wine...but the area Im seeing the most across the field excitement seems to be revolving around all this darker new emerging music.

it's cool, but I wonder: doesn't it have more to do with the fact that oOoOO and Light Asylum are actually pretty fucking good?

regardless of if it's a meme or not, in the end the quality of the music wins out, no?

Are these still going on? I spent a little time there, and I have friends in the area and they said a lot of the related type shows were last year. The bigger name stuff verging on pop will play glasslands, but specific events Ive heard are few and far between these days

In a recent interview, Tearist speaking about LA "“Everyone is really supportive,” says Yasmine Kittles. “The DIY music scene in Los Angeles,” her partner Will Menchaca agrees, “is really pretty strong.”"

Its all recent news about LA to me! But in Oakland/San Francisco which is closer to me, theres been an increasing amount of these sort of shows. In the last two months theres shows with Funerals, White Ring, oOoOO, Grimes, Myrhh Ka Ba, Gatekeeper, etc.

Even Madison, WI (pop. 240,000) is getting into the game—thanks to Pale Noir <3. ΔΑΙΜΟΝ, I††, Textbreak, Preteen Pornstar, and Channel Four will be making their first appearances in Wisconsin (possibly the Midwest) on June 8th. I'm super pumped to not have to drive three hours to Chicago for a good dark electronic show.

Yeah that's exciting! I saw the explosion of wh shows in Austin recently, a wh club night open in Seattle, and a lot of mixed genre shows from Brooklyn, LA, San Francisco/Oakland etc.

I had previously only known about a smaller but dedicated(and loud) goth/industrial/rivethead/EBM scene in Madison Wisconsin. Good to see it's also having an emerging newer sort of dark scene emerging.

It's kind of surreal watching the traditional goth/industrial/ebm scene getting left behind as it sinks into obscurity, and then this large wave of acts inspired by older goth/industrial/noise rising and popping up completely outside of that world.

Could you post a link to where you find info for shows like this in Wisconsin or Chicago please?

I live in Milwaukee and have a project called Tombz going with a friend, and we LOVE this sort of stuff, but never see any sort of shows we can attend. Would definitely appreciate some info since I can't seem to find any. Thanks!

would love to go to my first WH/ dark rave.
i haven't heard about any events in nevada yet, in reno or las vegas. but then again, i would be very surprised if such an event came to nevada.
both cities aren't fully into the rave culture yet, and those people who are into rave culture still focus heavily on dubstep it seems. to the point where the raves in nevada now are ONLY dubstep raves featuring "amateur dubstep DJs" to put it VERY nicely.
EDC is coming to vegas again this year but i am definitely not going, lineup here: http://electricdaisycarnival.com/LasVegas/music.php

It really sucks that Australia is 2 years behind the rest of the world. Although i got to see Balam Acab last month and am now counting down to oOoOO's show in a couple of weeks. There's hope yet.

I saw Crystal Castles last October at the Reno events center. Mostly high schooler candy kid/preppy types, and all the openers were dubstep acts. I saw Crystal Castles a few months earlier in San Francisco and it was mostly college aged hipsters:)
Not sure what you mean by dark rave events. Even in my area(sacramento) there's raves, dubstep nights and even cybergoth 00ntz stuff. Though never specifically heard of a dark rave.
I do know of a pretty big wh/dark indie related showcase show coming to my town in late July, but ive been sworn to secrecy. Usually its mostly jangly indie pop/rock when it comes to indie, otherwise its all just rap/metal/bro rock

Wow, Balam Acab played there? Heh, that kid looks so young(and nerdy!) Love it.

And very cool, yeah I'm gonna get to see oOoOO again soon. Wish I could see him with Butterclock so that there was actual vocals to the songs.

Well you guys have Pogo, my absolute favorite modern electronic composer of recent years...as well as all the indie synth/rock stuff I dig

Thanks for the info, will definitely be trying to attend this. Also, if you're interested at all, we have stuff in the works and two songs out, we'd love to somehow be involved with what you have going on. http://tombz.bandcamp.com/

Go to the Light Asylum show tonight Monday in San Francisco at Public Works:) Pretty much everyone I know in the wh/dark alternative scene will be there from the bay. San Francisco is also of course home to oOoOO, one of my favorite of the newer dark pop acts.
