Darkwave
Re: Darkwave
I strongly recommend the "Projekt 200" compilation that features nearly all abovementioned artists (except CoX and DM of course). It contains in some parts breathtaking good music.

Re: Darkwave
I used to think Darkwave was the more 90s electronic/industrial/trip hop based goth like Switchblade Symphony, Machine in the Garden, Collide etc but I've heard it describe the earlier post punk type stuff too, so I'm a bit confused. I think Darkwave is used as an alternative to "goth" in these cases. The problem is that you had the old "waves" like New Wave, in that regard it makes sense, but "Wave" gets used a lot these days by more electronic heavy acts, and it feels more right for that in a sense.
Re: Darkwave
this subforum also seemed a good place to mention our new video, since we get called "darkwave".
however, there's a slight withc house influence in there, mostly in the keyboard pads, slightly overloaded vocals, and layers of noise.

Re: Darkwave
It is difficult to understand any of it now, looking backwards. Because all these genre names were created by media outlets with marketing in mind and they were very regional. But darkwave came from the divergence of new wave and post punk in the 70's. What was considered darkwave then, is mostly what we called goth in the 80's/90's. Bands like Bauhaus, Siouxsie, Sisters of Mercy. It's all postpunk music with a certain atmosphere and aesthetic.
Coldwave was a mess. Some regions equated it with darkwave and a more neoclassical feel. And then there was a movement of coldwave artists in the 90's that were basically doing industrial rock, like Cubanate, Think About Mutation, Chemlab, and Dessau. Everything on the Dynamica label or Fifth Colvmn which basically worshipped Godflesh and Ministry.

The Enocchian Bees! DVAR r so great!
I'm fully into Darkwave too, Lycia, Clan of Xymox, Collection D'Arnell Andrea, The Frozen Autumn, Die form , etc.
Re: Darkwave
There is much confusion on this issue because it was never globally defined. It was all regional. Cold Wave in the US was what other countries called "industrial rock". Cold Wave in France was what people in the UK called "post-punk", and what Americans called goth-rock an death-rock. Basically anything with dark themes that followed post-punk ideas. Darkwave in the US was adopted by the Projekt Records artists, and was vastly different than the strains of darkwave in Europe. Which was more like dark new wave/synthpop and were supported by labels like Hyperium and 4AD.cutups wrote:Ultimately I don't think there's really any difference in terms of sounds.yeah_dad wrote:can somebody explain to me the difference between coldwave and darkwave? ive listened to some stuff labled as coldwave but never understood what darkwave was. also listening to lycia right now, awesome call on that this really great
It's just that coldwave was an older term, and originated in France.
With the explosion of goth/industrial zines in the 90s, 'darkwave' became a much more popular term,
and 'coldwave' was kind of forgotten for a while, until the past 5 or so years when mining recent
culture has gotten so big.
Anyhow, here are some of my favs.

Re: Darkwave
in the united states Darkwave is clan of xymox, etc
coldwave was guitar industrial - front line assemblies album hardwired, or Die Krupps, Sister Machine Gun, etc.
but things change, terms change. punk is a great example the sex pistols crass black flag nofx are all 'punk' and all completely different from one another.
i figure just listen to everything and see if you like it or not. genres definitely do help when searching stuff out because there is just soooo much music on teh interwebz but things never seem to classify right all the time.
--- i just saw the other dudes post, yeah, hes about nailed it and explained it better than me -- haha--
