ITT: We discuss favorite Darkwave artists/bands.

My perspective:
Clan of Xymox would have to be my definitive of the genre, and influences my work as much as Depeche Mode & Skinny Puppy; the holy trinity.

It's a side project from the guys of VON, which is a Black Metal band supposed to be quite respected. I like it very much

That's really more Deathrock, but not too far off! Plus, now you inspired me to make a thread for the deathrock fans, cause it seems there's quite a few of us.

As far as Darkwave, I really like a lot of the darkwave that came out of the deathrock revival, like The Phantom Limbs, The Vanishing, and sixteens, as well as a lot of newer neo-darkwave like Stridulum-era Zola Jesus, cosmetics, Funerals, and the like. I don't know that much about earlier 80's and 90's darkwave, but I like Fad Gadget a lot, and I've heard it said they were borderline darkwave.

Fuck the Cruxshadows.

Many songs of The Crüxshadows feature a heavy Celtic sound, which contrast with the fundamentals that compose Darkwave.
It's like Village music mixed with a Symphonic Orchestra, apply whichever to the aforementioned.

They aren't that bad, but the vocalist can easily become annoying. I respect Rogue because of his bloodline (du Pont family), coming from the fact that I'm also of noble blood, and that he's very educated apparently.

Dark Wave, also written as darkwave, is an umbrella term which refers to a movement that began in the late 1970s. Building upon the basic principles of those musical movements, dark wave evolved through the addition of dark, thoughtful lyrics and an undertone of sorrow. Dark wave is inseparably connected with the stylistic developments of the late 1970s and the 1980s.

Projekt records really put out some great stuff in the 90's. Lycia is def one of my all time favorite bands and although I haven't listened to them in ages those first 2 Black Tape albums were solid. I think I'll throw them on the record player now.

can somebody explain to me the difference between coldwave and darkwave? ive listened to some stuff labled as coldwave but never understood what darkwave was. also listening to lycia right now, awesome call on that this really great

Coldwave is a specific type of Darkwave. I don't know enough about coldwave to describe the specific thing that differentiates it from other forms of darkwave though. I do know that both the term and sub-genre originated in france.

Has anyone here heard Soft Kill?

Soft Kill is great, same with Blessure Grave. Also, other good modern neo-darkwave kinda stuff: Grimes. Really great, really weird, really poppy. Also available for free, so that's pretty cool.

Ultimately I don't think there's really any difference in terms of sounds.
It's just that coldwave was an older term, and originated in France.

With the explosion of goth/industrial zines in the 90s, 'darkwave' became a much more popular term,
and 'coldwave' was kind of forgotten for a while, until the past 5 or so years when mining recent
culture has gotten so big.
