By now, you probably already know if Disaro are for you or not. If not, the label happily accepting the label ‘Witch house’ which has been put upon their artists probably tells you all that you need to know. It’s difficult to hate such a shamelessly low budget imprint, especially when the music it puts out is so bloody good. Instead of a website, it’s got a horrible, garish MySpace page which would take older computers about a month to load, and instead of properly printed CD-Rs. Brilliantly, this every-expense spared route has lead to some of the most important new music of the year coming from the Houston based upstart.
Of all the acts to have put out material through Disaro, it’s probably oOoOO who have caused the biggest stir. Most solo work but occasionally done as a duo, they released their myspace tracks under the title of their most impressive track NoSummer4U to a fair amount of acclaim, and it’s fair to say that the 5 tracks have been the ones that have done most to define the gothic, chillwave inspired sound that the burgeoning Witch House genre is becoming known for. There’s going to be a crash somewhere down the line with the mainstream – and if universal haven’t already been ion contact over the use of Lady Gaga samples in the gloriously twisted PCKRFCRMX and the use of Nadia Oh on EGYPTNLVR, and there’s doubtless other cultural artefacts recycled within the work too. The work of Four Tet looms large over it all, which can only be a good thing – the sparse electronica creating a wonderful, post-dubstep sound that is almost exclusively about the atmosphere that it creates – icy caverns of sound, abandoned buildings of noise. It’s the futuristic, but in an updated pastiche of the dystopia shown in Blade Runner, but nowhere near as pretentious as that.
The CDR is out now and it has been for a while – and it’s only got to be a matter of time before some small indie label gives oOoOO some money to make a longplayer that’ll undoubtedly sell out it’s limited pressing in about a week.
