Remixing 101?

I'm having massive trouble getting my head around remixing, I can make music, it's not the best but it's something to start with. But as I said remixing is completely alien to me does anyone have any advice for a remix noobie?

get stuff, chop it up, put it back together differently with new stuff added, and use effects till done
