Latest 4-track EP from [lyn], released in January this year by EK4T3 collective. While his first 2 albums were hovering at the intersection of cosmic ambient, warped IDM experiments, and synthwave explorations, "Mælfunctiœn" seems to drift more towards Lyn's doom opera/witch house side-project ßęđŧīmĕ Šŧōŗĩėş. We still get his signature synth-led cinematic landscapes, but there's also a good amount of witchy rhythms and obscure melodies.
"Crépuscule" has an enchanting fairytale sensitiveness, drawing natural comparisons to Полея Увода and IC3PEAK, but with a zombie rave feel thanks to the drums. Church bells herald the arrival of "Spirits United", an end-of-the-world ballad with soothing vocals reminiscent of early Sleep ∞ Over layered over a pulsating beat. "L'Emprise" brings a moment of calmness and mystery with its ghostly howling and ambience, before the final track "Doomsday Machine" kicks in and takes over the speakers. The operatic singing makes the final return here, and is carried into the abyss by a classic witch house composition.
Check it out, one of the most interesting EPs I've had a pleasure of listening to this year.
