@idkyetok666

always happy to read others' thoughts and appreciation for music like this and artists like these.

i'm pretty sure "trashwave" as a term got coined during the small time of 2019-2021 when finesir's old discord server (dot hivemind) was active. a lot of the big creators and listeners with this influence really came together there first in a "social" sense.

before this though (around 2016-17) a lot of people started to come online and post music that would be adjacent to what i would say was the most productive era for sadwrist like deadrazy, stereo cross, geddon/demiurgefuck/basilisk/mazes purr, jojo/ssuupra/an2ima2ic//princess's guilt, thrvll/where swans will weep. your statement that there was a "fanclub" via SoundCloud is accurate in my honest opinion despite the fact i would probably say it was more of a loosely connected group that all clearly had inspiration and borrowed certain aspects from both 'wrist and vandal (the lack of genre-focused rules and conventions, overly distorted sound, intense and erratic arrangement/dynamics/presentation).

if you would count music like sadwrist's "this song isn't about you anymore" (2014) or †V∆ND∆L's "H0RR0R404" (2012) you could argue it's been around 10+ years easy, but i would also say these are borderline witch house releases because of the time, etc.

i'm fascinated by the respective witch house listener's take on trashwave and the inverse of the trashwave listener's opinion on witch house because it does feel like something now where both are unique entities and phenomena irrespective of each other (obviously witch house precedes trashwave and it is arguably its' strongest origin sound-wise).

vandal did stream on twitch for a time playing both music sets on decks and assetto corsa iirc a few years back. they also had some videos of them producing on YouTube back in the day (https://www.youtube.com/@arthurbigFS) where they used Logic and Native Instruments Massive for some insight into their track composition and workflow.

there really was no parallel to wrist at his peak and time, arguably 2016-2021, and i feel a lot of producers look to the tracks released during that time for all kinds of different influences because of all the different techniques and styles that came out of that prolific era. there was no fucks given with posting everything from 2-3 minute hardcore tracks and 10-20 minute ambient/industrial/techno/experimental pieces. Amok ⪻ ⟡ ⪼ koma is a classic, if you haven't, you should check out 3-66-7's version too if you enjoy that particular track https://3-66-7.bandcamp.com/track/--9.

and yeah, finesir is a totally unique highlight that should have his own appreciation stylistically as an individual. a lot you see with their music that clearly held interest and respect.

i hope for more growth and creative development with "trashwave" too. whether or not it lives or dies, it feels like something "authentic" and "underground" enough to challenge and flip a lot of popular conventions on their head and whatever follows it will share that same feeling. to many more.

that's exactly how it went
at first vandal and sadwrist were just making witch house but with time more and more producers inspired by them started making similar music and around 2016-2017 this kind of witch house began to separate and transform into a separate music genre called trashwave

i'm pretty sure that this term is way older than that, i remember using it around 2016-2017 and then even being positively surprised that i wasn't the only person who used it
if my memory is correct it might been first used by sadwrist as a tag on one of his tracks in 2016

yes, definitely agree - i think it's older than that (see this post, for example - but i suppose i meant that was the time it became cemented as the "accepted" term for the genre among a wide group of people. it's possible that the wrist used it, but i actually don't think that was the case. sadwrist used the term "thrash rave", but i don't recall anything being referred to as "trashwave", it would be insane to see an actual document/artifact of this for verification.

Interesting conversation re: origin of the term, I definitely recall seeing trash RAVE back in the day, not sure when trashwave was first used for this scene though.

The OG trashwave artist is Tobacco though ;) His 2010 album Maniac Meat sounds like a proto-trashwave genre

Even one of his songs uses the term
