I like the idea of a production forum too, to share tips and stuff on how to make witch house as well as sharing not only wh we made, but also non-wh music we haven't made. I fully like this idea.

thats a top quality idea, so people can post threads on specifics like getting a certain type of echo, or stretch, or tone shift etc? Knob Twizzlers may find it useful and so would amateurs and wannabes like me!

One problem with 50% of the Witch House stuff is MASTERING. People make great music and awesome sounds only to spoil it with crap finalising or bitcrushed limiting, crazy really as good mastering can make so much difference to the finished piece.

Software is a great way to start if you are a total novice maybe something like Abelton Lite,Reason, Fruity Loops etc . . , some people prefer to use Tracker software : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tracker_(music_software) and ive heard some amazing stuff from it.

Personally i dont use much software apart from sequencing via an ancient Atari ST running Cubase for Midi or Soundforge for editing loops/samples. Nothing comes close to using hardware like real analog synths and samplers. Once you have a hold of basic synthesis and sequencing via software invest in an vintage analog synth, any crappy drum machine can be made to sound good with Eq and outboard FX , Samplers like the EPS,FZ1 can be picked up cheap and sound better than anything software based and nothing beats the hands on approach. The main thing with this route is getting a good quality desk like a Soundcraft or Mackie and a great range of outboard FX (Dont discount guitar pedals as they can be amazing).

I can always tell if stuff is made with software as too many people rely on the soundbanks included, I hate hearing Ableton produced tracks with their ring modulators or stretching Fx its so lazy, Same with the Reason soundbanks.

The best advice is build your own sound palettes, dont rely on presets, build a unique soundbank/sample collection.

i think the poor sound quality is quite endearing, most of the time. to an extent.

Really valid point there about mastering. Happes a lot in other scenes as well, real shame. May be set up some kind of mastering house charity? Like a drop-in centre for the homeless but for skint musicians?

http://www.kvraudio.com/get.php A pretty good database of VSTs, both free and paid for. Just d/ld and see what works for you. TBH if yournot speding big bucks just use what comes with the software and get used to that first. Although I would reccomend Camel Audios free distortion plugin, Crusher as it kicks the shiz out of most of the in-built plugins. Audio Damage do a really extreme compressor called roughrider that will giveyou something unique and check out Blue Cat Audio for some decent phasers and flangers (again for free). Also SSL's site usually have a few good quality free ones up too. Happy Housing!

But can be done cheaply and makes so much difference to the finished product, even if your stuff is "Lo-Fi" doesnt mean it has to be low vol with no punch or headroom.

If anyone has any mastering enquiries PM me.
