On Modern Witch and The Possible “Witch House” Genre

This possibly emerging trend of “Witch House” joins the somewhat likely forces of the DIY electro explosion from a few years ago with an aftershock from the harry potter/twilight phenomena, I guess. I don’t know where the term originated, but at the front of this seems to be the small label Disaro records, who released SALEM’s cracked out bellwether of the genre a while back. The more recent incarnation is heavier on the house side of things than on the dance-ability aspect, highlighting bands like Modern Witch, who use sparse electronic chatter to bring out a ghostlier vision, and their singer does a teenage impression of Nico’s gothic leanings to play up the creep factor.

Her vampiric take on the German chanteuse is a breed not unlike some other acts we’ve come across lately (Brooklyn’s Pigeons come to mind), and certainly speaks to an overall shift from the escapist aesthetic of the lo-fi beach bands towards a darker, more industrial preference (hell, M.I.A. even just sampled Suicide). Similarly, the psychedelically-inclined occult fascination from west coast labels like Not Not Fun are being leathered up into into urban troops like the gnarly Woven Bones and Minks. Since these sub-genres of recent times have micro sized life cycles, it probably won’t be long until this approaches the awkward hump that “Chill Wave” sits on, but for the time being, it’s good news for us Cramps fans.
